Description

Star Paladin Steel Rain from Project Horizons. [link]

Quote from chapter 31 of PH:
“This is a one hundred and twenty millimeter anti-dragon cannon built to fire custom engineered concussion, armor penetration, and chemical rounds. It has one hundred and seventy two perfectly engineered parts all manufactured of high strength alloyed steel infused with a magical repair matrix to maintain perfect operation at all times. It has a precision range of over two miles at which shells will still impact with a force of five kilomacs.” He looked right at me. “Do you really think that a gun like this should be left in a weapons locker to collect dust?”

Power armor design and colors partially inspired by [link] and [link]

I painted power armor over these ponies: [link] and [link]

Tool used: GIMP.

Project Horizons is a fanfiction by Somber.
Pony is from "My Little Pony" by Hasbro.

This is the second version I made to correct pony size in this: [link] . According to 8 foot tall candy cane comparison [link] ponies in the show have 1 to 1.2 m head height.

I drew this after a discussion of how infeasible that caliber is on a pony. 120 mm is normally used for tank guns!

I went with 30 cm long grenade shell this time, because a Javelin missile is 1.1 m long, 120 mm tank shell 80 cm long, a mortar shell 60 cm long, so a grenade shell was the only thing that would even remotely fit on a pony. That said, the only two things that could have precision range of 3.5 km are artillery and missiles. Recoil on that monster is supposedly reduced by directing part of the thrust backwards, like in a missile launcher. Trouble is, this would greatly reduce the range of such weapon. There are also magical systems for bracing and recoil compensation.

EDIT: Added 120 mm artillery and mortar shells, moved some things around to look better, changed format to png, some small fixes. I tried to fit a scope on that thing, but there was no room. IX written on the cannon chassis is a joke.

Measurements of Mech's fan pictures of Deus, who had guns identical to Steel Rain, would put them at around 30 to 50 mm caliber.

This is what Somber has written in PH discussion thread:
'Sigh... I once listened to Niven talk at panel for aspiring writers and he told us "Don't ever give a number unless you're sure its the number you want to give." The impression I wanted to give with Deus and Rain were that these were frigging huge guns with magically extended range. I could have done that just with figurative language... but I looked up the diameter of howitzers and artillery and found 120 to be a nice round number. They are big guns and these are big guns being carried around by big ponies. Personally, I thought that these might be magically propelled shells (turning them technically into kinetic rockets) that continue to accelerate as they leave the barrel and shaped to continue their spinning as they travel, accounting for their range and deadly accuracy.

About 80% of Deus was synthetic and was really little more than a magically augmented pony tank. Doof was as big as Big Mac and augmented he was even bigger. He was designed to be a nigh unstopable engine of war and he worked... he scared the shit out of the zebra so much that a balefire response was quickly seen as their only option. So I wanted the size of his guns to reflect that.

Bad writing on my part. I forgot that ponies are much smaller than regular horses and so 120 is pretty excessive. 30mm would probably be more realistic... but then Glory's joke wouldn't work.'

I don't think it would be that small, did you get the shell size wrong?
